ABCs of Running the Windy City

Katie tagged me in this ABC survey a while ago and I thought it would be a fun thing to post this lovely Friday morning. I hope you enjoy!

A. Attached or Single?

Attached to this handsome stud on the right.

B. Best Friend?

I have many best friends from different times in my life- before college, college, and then now. They’re all important to me for different reasons and I’m not going to choose the bestest of the best!

C. Cake or Pie?

How about crumble? I once made strawberry rhubarb crumble from scratch and that was pretty fabulous (can’t find the picture though!) but I also love pineapple dump cake. So simple and so delicious.

D. Day of Choice?

Saturday! I love waking up and knowing I have two work-free days to spend as I please. It doesn’t hurt that it’s football day in the fall!

E. Essential Item?

My water bottle or a book/my nook. I rarely go anywhere without them.

F. Favorite color?

Somewhere in the blue-green spectrum. Right now I’m obsessed with navy.

G. Gummy bear or worms?

Neither… peach rings!

H. Hometown?

West Bloomfield, MI but I also feel pretty at home in Ann Arbor.

Clearly we’re big fans…

I. Favorite Indulgence?

Spending money on a non-essential item like new running gear, expensive face wash, or a new outfit.

One of my favorite places to spend my hard earned paycheck.

J. January or July?

July for sure. Chicago is AMAZING in the summer.

K. Kids?

One fur child…

L. Life Isn’t Complete Without?

Family, friends, running, and tacos. Priorities people!

Thanks Emily for the photo!

M. Marriage Date?

For who? I’m going to a wedding this weekend actually!

N. Number of brothers/sisters?

A big fat zero. I’m an only child.

O. Oranges or apples?

P. Phobias?

Toenails/nails in general (really had to face this one this year…)

Q. Quotes?

I’m not really a quote person but Kelsey posted one a while ago that really stuck with me…

johnlennonOtherwise, I’m much more of a mantra person. For example, right now with marathon training, I keep telling myself to “get uncomfortable” meaning to push myself. It may not be catchy but it’s motivating to me!

R. Reason to Smile?

Too many to list. Life is good right now!

S. Season of choice?

Fall, there’s just something about it that I love!

Picture from Kels.

T. Tag 5 people.

I’m not going to do that but feel free to respond in the comments!

U. Unknown Fact About Me.

I’ve traveled a lot… to Europe, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, and even Nepal (most recently). I would love to do it more frequently… new goal: win the lottery!

Just me and a baby elephant… NBD.

V. Vegetable?

All the vegetables! I’m particularly fond of brussels sprouts, squash, and kale though.

W. Worst Habit?

I turn into a slug when I get home from work. I want to eat, read, watch tv, and go to bed. I don’t want to clean, or empty the dishwasher, or run any errands. This girl wants to be lazy.

X. Xray or Ultrasound?

I’m not sure I’ve ever had an ultrasound but I’m guessing that like xrays, they’re not how I want to spend my time. Slug over here remember?

Y. Your Favorite Food?

All the foods! Seriously, no favorites!

Z. Zodiac Sign?

Feel free to answer some questions in the comments, I’d love to get to know you better!

Liebster Award

Is anyone else eagerly awaiting the start of spring? I’m honestly a little down on Chicago right now, it’s March 19 and this morning when I woke up to run it was 20 degrees feels like 6 out. Give me a break… or at least some 40 degree weather!

Anyway, last week, Katie nominated me for a Liebster Award. I’m pretty sure I’ve been nominated in the past but a search on my blog for a post comes up negative so I’m going to assume that I’ve never participated…. until now :).

First- 11 random things about me
1. When I was young, I really wanted to play in the WNBA and I played basketball basically year round all through middle school and high school. When I stopped growing at 5’3″, I realized playing basketball post-high school probably wasn’t going to happen! The good news is I learned a lot from my experiences (including many “life lessons”) and made quite a few friends.

2. I’ve given up on yoga. I’m sorry, I just can’t get into it. My mind wanders, I watch the clock, and I miss sweating. The only “good” feeling I get from going to a class is knowing that I got a mental workout by not leaving early.

3. I was born, raised, and did my undergrad in Michigan and then moved to Chicago to go to grad school. This makes me one of the many Michigan transplants (and Michigan alum) living in Chi-town.

4. Speaking of living in Chicago, I never pictured myself as living in a city. I’m definitely not a “city girl” but I’ve learned to appreciate just how convenient living in a city can be. I still have my freak out moments (I grew up on a lake and then lived in suburbia) but living in a city has forced me to grow up and I can appreciate that.

5. I tore my ACL when I was in high school (see basketball above) and had surgery on both knees to repair it. I went through a lot of rehab right after the surgery and then some physical therapy that I totally skipped out on. Whoops. I guess my 15 year old self just didn’t have the patience for it. I’ve noticed that I have a few strength imbalances that are most likely a result of skipping the PT but for the most part my knees never both me. *Knock on wood*. I’ve been lucky!

6. I feel so fortunate that I’ve met a great group of girls in Chicago. While I was never unhappy in the city, I really missed having girlfriends ya know? Being part of a book club, having girls nights, and going on girl dates has really made the last year extra special!

7. I wear the same jewelry every day. The same earrings, the same necklace, and the same ring. Sometimes I’ll wear a bracelet or I’ll add another necklace but I always wear the same pieces. I also can’t sleep or work out in any of it so I take it off/put it on at least twice a day.

8. I have glasses but I almost always wear my contact lenses. I’ve started forcing myself to take my contacts out at least 30 minutes before bed to let my eyes breathe but that window of time is basically the only time you’ll find me wearing my glasses.

9. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. I’m honestly not too bothered by this fact now but it was difficult being inartistic at a high school that emphasizes art classes! I had to take two years of art classes (4 semesters) so I ended up taking a lot of random beginner classes like metal smithing, ceramics, and weaving. Funny story, I ended up liking weaving (it’s methodical) enough to take honors weaving my senior year!

10. My “sensitive runners stomach” has disappeared with eliminating food allergens. I’m finding that I can run faster, longer, and more comfortably on more pre-run fuel and while taking in more calories while running. Shocker, right?

11. I’ve always been a coffee drinker but I’m big on the caffeinated beverage right now. I’ve just been loving the taste and drinking multiple cups hasn’t been affecting my sleep one bit so I’m not going to stop anytime soon :P.

Now it’s time for Katie’s questions
1. What’s your biggest goal for 2013? I didn’t make any “life” goals for 2013 and decided to stick with fitness/running goals that were more concrete and measurable. I have to say, of the goals I made, PRing in the marathon is the most important to me for many reasons.

2. What’s your favorite way to relieve stress? Pounding the pavement obviously :P. I also like to bake, I find being in the kitchen and measuring ingredients really soothing.

3. What’s your favorite beer (or drink)? I’ve been drinking more wine than beer lately but my favorite beer would probably be a Duvel.. or not because I’m forgetting about something delicious.

4. Workouts- morning or night? In the morning, 100%.

5. What’s your biggest motivator? Is the fact that I just really really love to run and be active considered motivation? People ask me all the time how and why I get up at 5 am to run and my only answer is that I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it. It’s that simple. (Note: You can love to run any time of the day… I’m not discrediting that. I just happen to love to do it first thing!).

Wednesdayrun6. What type of blog topics would you like to read about more on Live Half Full? I really enjoy the motivational posts!

7. What’s your favorite season and why? Fall and spring- not too hot, not too cold and perrrfect running weather! Plus, who doesn’t love college football in the fall?

8. Any fun trips planned for 2013? Boston in less than one month and Ian and I are talking about visiting one of his friends in Colorado later in the spring/early summer. Besides that nothing too crazy.

9. What’s your favorite current television show? I’m hooked on gossip girl right now and Ian and I have been watching Fringe together. It’s also really good and completely different from gossip girl :P.

10. Do you celebrate anniversaries with your significant other? Yep! We don’t necessarily do gifts but we make note of month anniversaries and go out to dinner and do gifts for bigger, year anniversaries (like that time we went to Boka...)

11. Do you cook dinner every night? I do something in the kitchen every night whether it’s roasting veggies to throw on a salad, making something quick for Ian, or cooking a bigger dinner. Some nights it takes me an hour and other nights it’s less than 5 minutes.

Now it’s your turn, answer a question (or a few) in the comments or do this survey on your blog!

Last Chance Survey

After staying up way too late on Tuesday night watching election stuff + getting up super early to fit in a long run on Wednesday, my brain has completed turned to mush. So, instead of rambling on about who knows what today (it wouldn’t be pretty I promise), I’m going to fill out the Last Chance Survey that’s been floating around blog land. Enjoy!

1. Last food you ate?

Well I’m currently eating breakfast which is pumpkin protein oats in a sunflower butter jar with banana slices. Pumpkin oats + sunflower butter might be one of my all time favorite combinations!

2. Last beverage you drank?

I’m drinking water right now and looking forward to my coffee when I get to the office ;).

3. Last workout?

This morning I competed a 6 mile recovery run. Nothing too out of the ordinary to report but I am LOVING that it’s getting light earlier. I keep reminding myself to appreciate the light because it will only last a few weeks!

4. Last thing you pinned?

I use Pinterest almost exclusively for recipes so the last thing I pinned was OSG’s Fall Detox Salad. Yum!

5. Last text message you sent?

“It feels so cold out today”. Pretty self-explanatory :P.

6. Last blog you visited?

7. Last tweet you sent?

Besides for tweeting my run through Daily Mile, my last tweet was to Erin about moving to a self-hosted platform.

8. Last place you visited?

Well the last place I physically went to was work  but if we’re talking about vacation (besides going home to Michigan) it’d be Boston!

9. Last time you did ab work?

Remember when I tried the Whittle my Middle Challenge? Yeah. I lasted about 2 weeks. Even though I could tell I was getting stronger, I lost interest pretty quickly.

10. Last show you watched?

Ian and I have been [slowly] working our way through Arrested Development. I love it!

11. Last thing you baked?

I helped Ian make some cinnamon rolls last night. I’m not sure which recipe Ian picked or why but I do know that I was called in for damage control about halfway through. They actually turned out well though and for picking a complicated recipe, Ian did great.

12. Last thing you instagrammed?

Ah I’m so bad about using instagram but it’s a picture of Sonic all swaddled up in a towel.

13. Last item on your to-do list today?

Laundry! I washed the linens and towels last night but I forgot to do my own laundry. Annoying!

Now it’s your turn, pick a question and answer it :)

Survey Thursday

Katie was sweet enough to tag me in a survey and since I like learning weird things about different bloggers, I figured I’d complete it and throw it out there. It’s always fun to get a discussion going too so feel free to answer one or all of the questions in the comments or to complete the survey on your blog!

1. What’s your favorite animal and why? I love all animals equally. Obviously, I’m slightly biased towards cats because of Sonic but I also want to get a dog eventually and love visiting with them. When I was growing up, my favorite animal was a ring tailed lemur. I don’t know why either.

2. What are the colors of your bedroom walls (currently or growing up)? Currently my walls are a light green color but my bedroom at home has pink walls. I always meant to repaint them but I never got around to it.

3. What’s your favorite sports team? I love anything Michigan but I’m a particularly big fan of football and basketball. I also used to be a huuuuge Detroit Pistons fan but got fed up with the organization as a whole (nerrrd) and couldn’t watch the games anymore.

4. Where is your dream vacation spot? This is such a hard question and I’ve been incredibly lucky to have travelled a lot in my 24 years. I’d have to say that I really want to go to Africa (South Africa in particular) and the parts of Europe that I haven’t visited (England, Ireland, & Scotland for example). Someday!

5. Describe your perfect weekend. I love a mix of good food, relaxing, working out, and productivity. I need the balance of all four, otherwise my weekend doesn’t feel complete.

6. Do you love trashy reality TV? (I DO, I DO!) Umm yes! Jersey Shore, Toddlers & Tiaras, Teen Mom, Dance Moms, etc. I only watch a few of those shows every week but when I have those rare moments of free time, I love to get my trashy tv on.

7. One thing you wish you were good at? I would love to have a semblance of artistic ability. My high school was a private school that specialized in the arts and I grew up surrounded by artistic talent. Unfortunately, I was not very good at anything. I ended up liking weaving (I was okay at it) and finished up all of my required art credits working on the loom. I even ended up taking honors weaving!

8. What is your favorite kind of cookie? I love oatmeal raisin cookies and everything cookies with random nuts, seeds, and dried fruit thrown in. I actually prefer a healthier tasting cookie to a really sweet one!

9. What is the best goal you have achieved to date? This is a tough question. I’m not sure if it’s the best goal I’ve accomplished but graduating with my MPH while working half time, training for a marathon, and working on my thesis was a great accomplishment. There were times that I wasn’t sure I was going to graduate on time but I ended up finishing and I was so happy!

10. What’s your favorite clothing to wear- (workout or normal)? Workout clothes. I’m one of those people the changes into sweats or shorts almost immediately after getting home from work. I like to dress up every so often but comfort first!

11. Generally what time do you go to bed and wake up during the week? During the week I go to bed between 10 and 11 unless I am super tired and crash at 8. Whoops! I usually wake up around 5 in the morning to run/swim/bike before work.

And with that I’m out! Have a wonderful Thursday!

A to Z Survey

I hope everyone’s having a wonderful weekend! I’ve spent most of my day studying away for midterms next week, so I figured I’d complete this survey I found on meals and moves instead of boring you with information on randomized clinical trials…

A is for age: 23 but I’ll be 24 in April.

B is for breakfast today: Ian and I may start a new traditon, waffle stack Saturday’s :)

I had mine with peanut yogurt and bananas in the middle and then sunflower seed butter and warm blueberries on top.

Ian’s had marshmallow fluff and banana in the middle and then was topped with cookie butter and syrup.

C is for currently craving: Anything with nut butter + banana + chocolate! I’m hooked on this flavor combination right now.

D is for dinner tonight: I wasn’t in the mood to cook so I threw together an easy rice bowl.

I sauteed kale and onions and then stirred in some TJ’s kimchee rice. I topped it with a sunny-side up egg for protein and siracha [unpictured] for spice.

E is for favorite type of exercise: Running, no doubt about that.

F is for an irrational fear: I don’t like flying! Even though I’ve flown a lot of places (including to Asia twice), every time I get on a plane I panic a little.

G is for gross food: Fish balls. I still don’t know what these are but I remember trying one in Bangkok and almost puking in the middle of the mall. Yuck!

H is for hometown: West Bloomfield, Michigan

I is for something important: My flash drive, I swear I’d have a heart attack if I lost it!

J is for current favorite jam: I’m honestly not that into music and listen to old music over and over again (weird, right?) but I do like Foster the People’s “Pumped up Kicks”. I guess that’s newish…

K is for kids: One furbaby :)

L is for current location: Chicago

M is for the most recent way you spent money: I bought a way overpriced fancy flavored water at 7-11. It wasn’t worth it, I’m not sure what I was thinking.

N is for something you need: More time to get things done or maybe some sleep…

O is for occupation: Primarily student but I also work at a health policy research institute.

P is for pet peeve: Any type of slurping, sucking, or any other weird noises people make when the eat. Please just eat your food and be done with it not everyone in the room needs to hear you do it!

Q is for a quote: I have two and both are running-related (go figure):

“We may train or peak for a certain race, but running is a lifetime sport.” -Alberto Salazar

“The difference between the mile and the marathon is the difference between burning your fingers with a match and being slowly roasted over hot coals.” -Hal Higdon

R is for random fact about you: When I was really little I told my mom that I wanted to be a gas station attendant when I grew up because I thought pumping gas was soooo cool.

S is for favorite healthy snack: Veggies and hummus or fruit, pretty simple :)

T is for favorite treat: Ice cream, fro yo, or custard. What can I say, I <3 ice cream.

U is for something that makes you unique: My feet have actually shrunk as I’ve gotten older (and I have huuuge feet for my 5’3 frame), when I was in high school I would wear a 9.5/10 but now it’s more like an 8.5/9… I’m not making this up guys.

V is for favorite vegetable: Toughy, I love brussels sprouts and cauliflower. I also really like carrots but a certain person *cough* Ian *cough* doesn’t so I rarely but them.

W is for today’s workout: Since I can’t run, I ellipticaled at the gym for 30 minutes and then swam 1,200 yards. I had planned to do more but my arms were sore and there was a random couple making out and groping each other in the pool/ hot tub (switching back and forth). I was just too grossed out to hang around… I mean it’s a gym pool not a love nest.

X is for X-rays you’ve had: Too many to count… seriously. I’m also going in for x-rays in three two weeks for my heel. Fun stuff.

Y is for yesterday’s highlight: Sushi and Scooter’s most definitely. I’m not the biggest fan of Friday’s because I’m usually so tired and the day just draaaags on.

Z is for your time zone: I’m in central, woohoo!

Now it’s your turn, fill out some of these, and tell me a little bit about yourself :)
