Saturday Morning Change-Up

Workout
I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve swam! Getting in the pool felt really good but also really foreign. I did my interval workout but cut out the pulls and kicks because I figured swimming one mile would be hard enough without much base. It was, but I was pretty surprised that my breath was still there. I felt a little awkward and slow but overall it felt great to be back in the water :).

I finished swimming earlier than expected and casually biked until the yoga class started. I honestly should have skipped yoga altogether. I’ve been to a class once before at my gym and wasn’t thrilled with the instructor. I figured I’d give it another shot today but again was disappointed. Part of this could be my preference, I like hot yoga and bikram style (not taught at my gym) but I also think her moves were too advanced for the class. Most times she was the only one who could even get into the pose, let alone hold it for the whole time.

I guess I’m glad I went but if I decide to start practicing yoga regularly I’ll have to find a good studio.

Interval-tastic

This morning I had one of the greatest workouts. Don’t you love that feeling? My body is tired and energized at the same time :-D

Monday is normally my off-day because I choose to do my long runs on Sunday. However, my schedule got screwed up this week when I chose to run 14 miles on Saturday instead of the usual Sunday. So, I figured I’d take Sunday off and let my legs recover from my run and then use Monday as a free workout day to do whatever I like (instead of focusing on the BM).

My mom gave me some new swim toys for Christmas, so I decided to finally put them to good use. FYI many pools provide these and you wouldn’t need to purchase them, mine however does not.

I also wanted to run a few miles today, just to loosen my legs, so I figured I would just take care of that while at the gym. I packed a bag full of my workout gear- kickboard, swim buoy, towel, goggles, swim plan, glasses case, contacts, change of clothes, gym shoes, socks, ipod, etc.

The bag was stuffed!

It was totally worth it though. I swam a total of 1,800 yards using a modified version of my interval workout including lots of pulls and kicks (needed to use my new toys) and then hit the treadmill for 3 miles of running intervals. I warmed up at 7.5 and then alternated between 7.6 and 8.7 staying at each speed for 2 minutes. Whew!




Christmas in Africa

I haven’t been able to really “go out” or spend a lot of time with my friends this past semester, so last night was so much fun! Not only did I get to spend some time with my school friends, but I also got to see one of my oldest friends from Michigan.

My school friends and I grabbed an early dinner and a drink at Hackney’s in the Loop. I brought my camera but talking predominated at dinner so all I have to show is a picture I took before leaving the apartment.

I had fish tacos for dinner and a glass of the house chardonnay. They were both very good but the company was better :)

After dinner, I met Ian and we headed out to my friend’s party way up north. He is heading to Morocco next week so his party was themed “Christmas in Africa”. My friend is very creative and eccentric in the best of all ways so his party was definitely a little crazy (and I might have felt a bit out of my comfort zone). But I did take some awesome pictures of the decorations in his apartment.

Ian and I didn’t get home until 2 a.m. and after a quick snack (hunger grumbles) we passed out in bed.

Workout
Even though I didn’t go to bed until nearly 2:30 a.m., I woke up around 8 and couldn’t fall back asleep. I checked the weather to see what I should wear out running but after seeing that it was 13 degrees feels out (feels like 2!!), I decided today would be a gym day. I ran four easy miles on the treadmill while watching Kendra on E!. I’ve never seen the show before, but it was nice to let my mind rot while running instead of watching the usual news :P I could do that more often !

Lots of errands to do today and then date night tonight! Enjoy your Saturday!
